Electric Vehicle (EV) Loan from PSU Banks: Eligibility and Rates (2026)

Published 11 October 2026 · 6 min read · Clean EMI Editorial

Most PSU banks now offer dedicated EV loan products, often at a marginally lower interest rate than their standard car loan to align with government policy on clean mobility. The structure is similar to a regular new car loan, but there are a few EV-specific details worth knowing before you apply.

Part of the Vehicle Loan guide series.

Why PSU banks offer preferential EV rates

The government has encouraged PSU banks to offer concessional interest rates on electric vehicles as part of India's EV adoption push. Not all PSU banks have a separately branded EV product, but most offer rate concessions of 25–50 basis points below their standard car loan rate for new electric vehicles. Check the specific bank's current schedule for the exact reduction.

LTV and down payment on an EV loan

For new electric cars and commercial EVs, PSU banks typically finance 80–90% of the on-road price, similar to a petrol or diesel vehicle. The remaining 10–20% is your down payment. The on-road price includes basic vehicle cost, extended warranty, insurance (first year) and accessories sometimes — confirm what the bank includes in the financed amount.

Eligibility requirements

  • CIBIL score of 700 or above
  • Stable income (salaried or self-employed) sufficient to cover the EMI within the 40–50% FOIR limit
  • The vehicle must be new (not second-hand) and from a manufacturer listed in the bank's approved models list
  • Vehicle registration and insurance in the applicant's name

EV subsidy and FAME interaction

If the vehicle you are buying qualifies for a central or state government EV subsidy (such as residual FAME II benefits, PM E-DRIVE or state-specific schemes), the subsidy typically reduces the on-road price before the loan is calculated. Confirm with the dealer and the bank how the subsidy flows — whether it is deducted upfront from the invoice price or paid later — because it affects the loan amount.

What to watch for with EVs specifically

  • Battery replacement cost: Separate battery lease arrangements (offered by some manufacturers) can affect the asset's residual value, which the bank notes in its assessment.
  • Resale value: EV residual values are evolving. Banks may apply stricter LTV for certain models with uncertain resale history.
  • Charging infrastructure: Not a direct loan factor, but relevant to your own planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get an EV loan for a two-wheeler?

Some PSU banks do offer two-wheeler EV loans, but the minimum loan amount on this portal is ₹10 lakh, which covers four-wheelers and commercial EVs. For a two-wheeler, a direct bank application is better.

Is the EV loan rate always lower than a petrol car loan?

At most PSU banks that have a dedicated EV product, yes — typically by 25–50 basis points. Confirm the current rate schedule before applying.

Does a FAME subsidy affect how much loan I can take?

If the subsidy reduces the invoice price before the bank calculates LTV, you may end up financing a smaller amount. In some cases the subsidy is credited separately. Confirm the flow with the dealer and lender.

Are EV loans available for commercial vehicles?

Yes, many PSU banks have extended EV rates to electric commercial vehicles (e-buses, e-trucks, last-mile delivery vehicles) as well. Eligibility and LTV may differ from passenger cars.
