Commercial Vehicle Loan for First-Time Business Owners
Published 10 July 2026 · 5 min read · Clean EMI Editorial
PSU banks assess a commercial vehicle loan differently for someone buying their first truck or commercial vehicle to start a business than they do for an established fleet operator adding another unit. Here’s what a first-timer should expect.
Part of the Vehicle Loan guide series.
No operating history to lean on
An existing fleet operator can show past revenue from similar vehicles as evidence of repayment capacity. A first-time buyer can’t, so the bank leans more heavily on your personal income, CIBIL score and any business plan or contract you can show (e.g., a transport contract already lined up) as the basis for underwriting.
Down payment and loan-to-value
First-time commercial vehicle buyers often see a somewhat more conservative loan-to-value than an established operator with a repayment track record, meaning a larger upfront down payment. This isn’t a fixed rule across banks, but it’s a common pattern in how commercial-purpose lending is risk-weighted.
What strengthens a first-time application
- A signed transport or supply contract, even a short-term one, showing expected income from the vehicle
- Any prior income (salaried or another business) that demonstrates general repayment ability, separate from the new venture
- A co-applicant with stable income, if available
Where CGTMSE-style backing doesn’t apply
Unlike some MSME working-capital schemes, a commercial vehicle loan is secured against the vehicle itself (hypothecation), not backed by a collateral-free guarantee scheme — the vehicle is the primary security regardless of business vintage. See eligibility and the minimum ₹10 lakh loan size on the Vehicle Loan page, offered through banks including Punjab & Sind Bank.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a business with zero operating history get a commercial vehicle loan?
Yes, but expect closer scrutiny of your personal income, CIBIL score and any contracts or agreements that support expected income from the vehicle, since there’s no business track record to rely on.
Does the vehicle itself act as collateral?
Yes, PSU banks register a hypothecation charge on the vehicle’s registration certificate, which serves as the primary security for the loan.
Is CIBIL 700 still required for a first-time commercial vehicle loan?
Yes, the same minimum CIBIL score of 700 applies across every loan category on this portal, including commercial vehicle loans for new business owners.
Can I apply jointly with a family member to strengthen the application?
Yes, a co-applicant with stable income can meaningfully help a first-time commercial vehicle application, the same way it helps any other loan category here.
