Vehicle Loan Tenure and EMI Planning: Choosing the Right Length
Published 30 September 2026 · 5 min read · Clean EMI Editorial
A longer tenure gives a smaller EMI but costs more in total interest. A shorter one does the opposite. The right choice depends on your cash flow, not on what looks cheapest per month, and a worked example shows the trade-off clearly.
Part of the Vehicle Loan guide series.
The trade-off in numbers
Take an illustrative loan of ₹10 lakh at 9% a year. These are example figures, not a quote.
- 3 years: EMI about ₹31,800, total interest about ₹1.45 lakh
- 5 years: EMI about ₹20,758, total interest about ₹2.46 lakh
- 7 years: EMI about ₹16,089, total interest about ₹3.51 lakh
Stretching from 5 to 7 years lowers the EMI by roughly ₹4,700 but adds about ₹1 lakh in interest.
Why a very long tenure can backfire
A vehicle loses value faster than a house. With a long tenure, you may owe more than the vehicle is worth for much of the loan, which matters if you want to sell or upgrade early. Banks also set maximum tenures for vehicle loans, which differ by vehicle type and lender.
Down payment helps
A larger down payment reduces the amount you borrow, which lowers the EMI without stretching the tenure. It also signals lower risk to the bank. Compare the extra cash you put in against the interest it saves.
A simple planning rule
Keep all your EMIs, including the new one, comfortably within what you can afford each month after essential expenses, leaving room for insurance, fuel and maintenance. Choose the shortest tenure whose EMI you can pay without strain, and prepay when you have surplus funds, as floating-rate loans to individuals are generally prepayable without penalty. Confirm this in your sanction letter.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the longest tenure for a vehicle loan?
It depends on the bank and the vehicle type. Seven years is a common upper limit for new cars, but check the current policy of the lender.
Is it better to choose a short tenure?
A shorter tenure costs less interest overall but has a higher EMI. Pick the shortest one you can pay comfortably.
Can I prepay a vehicle loan?
Floating-rate loans to individuals are generally prepayable without penalty. Check your sanction letter for the exact terms.
Does a bigger down payment reduce the interest rate?
Not always, but it reduces the loan amount and the total interest, and lower loan-to-value can help the application.
