CIBIL Report Errors: How to Find, Dispute and Correct Them
Published 10 October 2026 · 6 min read · Clean EMI Editorial
A surprising number of credit reports carry mistakes: a loan that was closed but still shows as active, a payment marked late that was made on time, or an account that is not yours at all. Any one of these can drag a score below the 700 floor and stall a home or vehicle loan. The good news is that errors can be corrected, and the process is free. Here is how to find them and what to do next.
Part of the Home Loan guide series.
Errors worth looking for
- A loan or card you closed that still shows as active, or a closed account showing an outstanding balance.
- Payments marked overdue (DPD) for months you paid on time.
- Accounts you never opened, which can point to identity misuse or a mixed-up file.
- Wrong personal details: name, date of birth, PAN or address.
- Duplicate entries of the same loan, which double your apparent obligations.
- Wrong credit limit or sanctioned amount, which distorts your utilisation.
Read the report loan by loan
Do not stop at the score. Open each account and compare it with your own records: loan statements, closure letters and bank statements. Our guide on how to read a CIBIL report walks through every section, and the credit report analyzer lays out your accounts and enquiries in one view so mismatches stand out.
How to raise a dispute
- Collect proof: closure letters, no-dues certificates, payment receipts and statements.
- File on the bureau’s dispute channel: the bureau’s website has an online dispute form where you select the account and the field that is wrong.
- Contact the lender too: the bank or NBFC that reported the data is the one that must confirm or correct it.
- Track the reference number: RBI rules give the bureau and lender a limited window, around 30 days, to resolve a complaint, so follow up if you hear nothing.
- Pull a fresh report after the correction to confirm it has actually updated.
Timing matters before a loan application
Corrections take weeks, not days, so check your report well before you apply. If you are planning a home loan in the next few months, fix errors first and also read how to improve your CIBIL score before applying. Branch staff at banks such as Punjab National Bank pull their own report, so an unresolved error can surface at the worst moment.
Clean EMI is a private facilitation service, not a bank, and cannot edit your report. We can only help you spot issues; the correction is made by the bureau and your lender. See the Home Loan page for the wider process.
A short pre-application checklist
- Download your latest report and read every account, not just the score.
- Match each loan’s status and outstanding amount with your own statements.
- Confirm your name, PAN and date of birth are correct.
- Raise disputes for every mismatch and keep the reference numbers.
- Re-check the report after the correction window, then apply.
Doing this once a year, even when you are not planning a loan, means errors never pile up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does disputing an error cost anything?
No. Raising a dispute with the credit bureau and your lender is free.
How long does a correction take?
It depends on how quickly the lender confirms the data, but RBI rules set a window of about 30 days, so plan for a month or more before you apply.
What if the error is an account I never opened?
Dispute it immediately with the bureau and the lender named on the entry, and consider reporting possible identity misuse to the lender and, where needed, the authorities.
Will a dispute lower my score?
Filing a dispute does not by itself lower your score. A genuine error being fixed may raise it.
