How to Improve Your CIBIL Score Before Applying for a Home Loan
Published 11 October 2026 · 6 min read · Clean EMI Editorial
The PSU banks on our panel look for a CIBIL score of 700 or above before a home loan application goes further. If your score is below that, or close to it, a few months of careful credit habits can make a difference. Here is what moves a score, what does not, and where the Credit Score Enhancer fits in.
Part of the Home Loan guide series.
Payment history comes first
Every EMI and credit card bill paid on time strengthens your history. A single late payment can stay on your report for a long time. Set up auto-debit for dues and avoid missing due dates.
Keep card balances low
High balances against your credit limit are a common reason scores stay low. Paying the statement in full, or keeping usage well below the limit, helps. Avoid taking a new loan just before you apply.
Limit new enquiries
Each loan or card application adds an enquiry to your report. Several in a short period can signal financial stress to a lender, so apply only where you have a real need.
Fix errors on the report
Errors such as closed loans shown as open, or wrong amounts, can be disputed with the bureau. The Credit Score Enhancer page explains how this is handled.
Check your progress
Re-check your report after a few months with the Free CIBIL Report Analyzer, then talk to an advisor before you apply. Results vary, and no one can guarantee a particular score.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to improve a CIBIL score?
It depends on what is pulling the score down. Changes in payment behaviour usually take several months to appear in a new report.
Does checking my own score lower it?
A self-check is generally recorded as a self-enquiry and does not count as a loan application.
What CIBIL score do I need for a home loan through Clean EMI?
Our criteria require a CIBIL score of 700 or above. Each PSU bank applies its own policy after that.
