How to Improve Your CIBIL Score Before You Apply for a Loan
Published 10 October 2026 · 6 min read · Clean EMI Editorial
There is no trick that fixes a CIBIL score overnight, but a few habits move it reliably. If you are below 700 or want a better rate, these steps are in order of impact. Start with your report, because you cannot fix what you have not read.

1. Get and read your report
Download your free annual report and check it line by line using our guide to CIBIL report analysis. Start with a free CIBIL score check if you have not yet.
2. Pay every EMI and card bill on time
Payment history is the biggest factor. Set auto-debit for at least the minimum due, and pay the full amount when you can.
3. Bring card utilisation under about 30%
Pay down balances before the statement date, or ask for a higher limit without increasing spending. Utilisation is calculated on the balance reported to the bureau, which is often the statement balance, so paying after the statement can still leave a high figure on your report.
4. Dispute errors
A closed loan shown as open, a payment marked late that was on time, or an unknown account should be disputed with the bureau and the lender, with proof.
5. Avoid many new applications
Each application creates a hard enquiry. Apply once, to a lender that fits your profile.
6. Keep old accounts open, and mix credit sensibly
A long history helps, so avoid closing your oldest card or loan account if it is in good standing. A mix of secured and unsecured credit, handled well, is viewed more favourably than only cards. Do not take a loan you do not need just to build a mix.
7. Settle overdue amounts, and avoid “settlement”
A “settled” status shows that you paid less than owed and is heavily weighed. Clear dues in full if you can.
8. Give it time
After corrections and a few clean months, scores often start moving within one or two billing cycles, though recovering from serious delays takes longer. Check again before applying for a home loan, and see SBI’s page for what the largest PSU lender expects.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to improve a CIBIL score?
Fixing an error or lowering utilisation can show within a month or two. Recovering from missed payments or a settlement takes many months of clean history.
Does closing a credit card improve my score?
Usually not. Closing an old card can shorten your history and raise your utilisation ratio.
Does checking my own score hurt it?
No, checking your own score is a soft enquiry and does not lower it.
What score do I need for a PSU bank loan?
At least 700 for loans routed through Clean EMI.
