Sahi EMI: How to Choose an EMI That Fits Your Income

Published 10 October 2026 · 5 min read · Clean EMI Editorial

“Sahi EMI” means the right EMI: one that lets you repay on time, keep living normally and still save. It is not the lowest and not the maximum the bank allows. Use this three-step test before you accept any loan offer.

Part of the Home Loan guide series.

Step 1: know your safe EMI

Take your net monthly income. Multiply by 0.35 to 0.40. Subtract EMIs you already pay. What is left is a safe EMI for the new loan. For ₹90,000 net with ₹8,000 of existing EMIs and a 40% target, the safe new EMI is ₹36,000 − ₹8,000 = ₹28,000.

Step 2: turn it into a loan amount

At an illustrative 8.5% over 20 years, every ₹1,000 of EMI supports about ₹1.15 lakh of loan, so ₹28,000 supports about ₹32 lakh. Use the home loan calculator to try other tenures and rates.

Step 3: stress-test it

  • If income fell 20% for three months, could you still pay?
  • Do you have an emergency fund of six EMIs plus expenses?
  • Will other goals (school fees, insurance) still be funded?

Signs the EMI is not sahi

  • You need a credit card to cover the EMI month to month.
  • You skip insurance or savings to pay it.
  • The tenure only works at its maximum length with no room to prepay.

If any apply, choose a smaller loan, a co-applicant or a cheaper property. Read best EMI and tenure for more, and see Punjab & Sind Bank.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does sahi EMI mean?

Sahi is Hindi for right. A sahi EMI is one that fits your income, leaves room for savings and emergencies, and does not depend on borrowing elsewhere.

What percentage of salary should go to EMI?

Many borrowers aim for 35-40% of net income across all loans. Banks may allow more, but a lower share is safer.

Should I take the maximum loan I am eligible for?

Not necessarily. Eligibility is the bank’s limit, not your comfort level. Borrow what you need within your safe EMI.

Can I get a lower EMI later?

You can part-prepay, ask for a rate review or transfer the loan to a lender with a lower rate. See the balance transfer page for when that helps.
