How to Improve Your CIBIL Score from 600 to 750: A Practical Plan

Published 11 October 2026 · 7 min read · Clean EMI Editorial

A CIBIL score in the 600s blocks most PSU bank loan applications — the minimum on this portal is 700, and the best rates start at 750. Moving from 600 to 750 is achievable but takes consistent action over several months. Here is what actually moves the score, in order of impact.

Part of the Home Loan guide series.

First: understand why your score is where it is

Pull your CIBIL report (one free report per year from cibil.com) and read every entry. Scores below 700 almost always trace to one or more of: recent missed EMIs or minimum-due payments, an account written off or settled for less than the full amount, very high credit card utilisation, too many recent loan applications, or an error in the report.

The action plan differs by cause. Targeting the wrong factor wastes months.

Missed payments: the single biggest driver

Payment history is the largest component of a CIBIL score. If you have missed EMIs in the last 12 months, the first step is to bring every account fully current — pay all overdue amounts plus the current month's due. Then set up auto-debit so you never miss again.

A single missed payment can drop a score by 50–100 points. Conversely, 12 consecutive on-time payments following a patch of defaults can recover 80–100 points, though the old default will still show in the history for 7 years.

Credit card utilisation: the fastest lever

Using more than 30% of your total credit card limit is a signal of credit stress. If your cards are near their limit, paying them down to below 30% of each card's limit can raise your score within one to two billing cycles, because utilisation is recalculated each month from the reported balance.

If you have multiple cards, spreading the same spending across them lowers utilisation per card even at the same total spend.

Settled and written-off accounts: the hardest problem

A "settled" entry (paid for less than the full amount) or "written off" entry is one of the most damaging marks on a CIBIL report and lasts 7 years. The most effective route is to contact the lender, pay the remaining balance to convert the status to "closed" (fully paid), and then formally ask the lender to update the bureau record to reflect the full payment. This does not erase the history but it changes the account status, which banks view more favourably.

Correct errors in the report

About 10–15% of credit reports contain at least one error — a loan that is not yours, a closed account still marked active, or wrong overdue amounts. Raise a dispute directly with CIBIL (or the bureau that holds the error) and follow up with the lender. RBI guidelines require resolution within approximately 30 days. Clean EMI can assist with disputes on a best-effort basis.

Realistic timeline

If your score is low primarily due to utilisation, you can see improvement in 1–3 months. If it is due to missed payments, 6–9 months of clean payment history typically moves a 620 score into the 680–700 range, and 12–18 months can reach 720–750. Settled or written-off accounts make the process slower, typically 18–24 months of clean history before the score comfortably clears 750.

Once your score reaches 700, revisit Home Loan eligibility and see the rates available through Punjab National Bank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can paying off all my loans at once spike my score quickly?

Paying off credit card debt reduces utilisation and shows up fast. Paying off term loans (home, car) helps but moves the score more slowly, as payment history weight accumulates over time.

Does closing old credit cards improve my score?

Usually not — closing a card reduces your total credit limit and can raise your utilisation ratio. Unless the card has a fee you want to avoid, keeping it open and unused is better for your score.

Does applying for new credit harm my score?

Each hard inquiry (from a loan or card application) can lower your score by 5–10 points. Avoid applying for new credit while you are trying to raise your score.

Is there a way to remove a genuine missed payment from my report?

Genuine, accurate entries cannot be removed — they stay for 7 years. Only errors (inaccurate entries) can be disputed and corrected.
