CIBIL Score Range Explained: What 300 to 900 Means for Your Loan

Published 13 October 2026 · 6 min read · Clean EMI Editorial

Your CIBIL score is a three-digit number between 300 and 900, and lenders use it as a quick first check on how you have handled credit in the past. A higher number generally signals lower risk, but the score only means something when you know which band you are in and how lenders read it. This guide explains the range, the commonly used bands, and how banks use the number in practice.

How the CIBIL score range works

CIBIL scores run from 300 to 900. The score is calculated from the information in your credit report, including your repayment history, how much of your available credit you use, how long your accounts have been open, the mix of loans and cards you hold, and how often you have applied for new credit. A borrower with no credit history may not have a score yet, because there is not enough data to calculate one.

Commonly used score bands

Credit bureaus do not publish one official set of labels for score bands, and each lender sets its own cut-offs. The bands below are a widely used way to describe the range, so treat them as a guide only:

  • Below 600: weak. Applications are often declined or sent for extra review.
  • 600 to 699: fair. Approval may depend heavily on income and other factors, and the rate can be higher.
  • 700 to 749: good. Many PSU banks treat this as a reasonable starting point for a secured loan.
  • 750 and above: very good. This generally gives you the widest choice of lenders and terms.

Why the score is only one part of the decision

A PSU bank looks at your score together with your income, existing EMIs, age, the type of loan and, for secured loans, the value of the property or vehicle. A score in the 700s does not guarantee approval, and a score below 700 does not rule out every loan. The score mainly affects which lenders will consider you, how much you can borrow and the interest rate offered. You can see how these factors fit together on the Clean EMI credit analyzer.

What moves your score within the range

Paying on time every month is the biggest factor. Keeping card balances low compared with your limit also helps, and so does avoiding many new applications in a short period. A single late payment can pull the score down, and the effect usually eases over time as on-time payments build up. For practical steps, read what a 700 score means and how to check it.

If your score sits in a lower band

Start by checking your full report for errors, then focus on the steps you control, such as clearing overdue amounts and reducing card balances. Avoid applying for several loans at once, because each application can add an enquiry to your report. The guide on improving your CIBIL score before you apply covers the sequence in more detail. Frequently Asked Questions

Is a score of 750 enough for every loan?

No. A high score helps, but lenders still check income, existing obligations and, for secured loans, the collateral. Final terms depend on the bank’s own assessment.

Why does my score differ between websites?

Different platforms may show different scores, from different bureaus, on different dates, or using different models. When you compare, rely on the official report.

How often does the CIBIL score update?

It changes when lenders report new account information, which is usually monthly. Check your report regularly rather than relying on a single reading.
