How Long Do Late Payments Stay on a CIBIL Report?
Published 13 October 2026 · 4 min read · Clean EMI Editorial
A late payment on a credit report does not disappear after the account is settled or closed. It stays in the payment history for a set period defined by RBI rules. Understanding how long a late payment remains visible — and how its weight in scoring changes over time — helps you plan a loan application with realistic expectations.

How long a late payment stays on your CIBIL report
The RBI's guidelines for Credit Information Companies (CICs), which govern all four licensed bureaus (CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, CRIF High Mark), specify a data retention period of seven years for credit information, including late-payment records. After seven years from the date of first delinquency or the date the account status was last updated, the adverse mark ages off the report.
This applies to:
- Individual late-payment DPD codes in the monthly payment grid.
- Account-level adverse status such as settled, written-off or suit filed.
Does the weight of a late payment decrease over time?
Yes. Bureau scoring models give more weight to recent payment history than to older history. A 30 DPD mark from 36 months ago on an account that has been clean since then will score significantly better than a 30 DPD mark from 4 months ago. The practical implication:
- A borrower with a single late payment from 2 years ago and a clean record since is often treated much the same as one with a fully clean history by many PSU bank underwriters.
- A borrower with a late payment from 4 months ago will likely need to wait for at least 12 months of clean payment history before applying for a large-ticket loan.
What to do while a late payment is still on your report
- Pay every current bill on time. A growing run of 000 codes in the months following the late payment is the most visible signal that the problem was isolated.
- Reduce utilisation. Lowering card balances below 30% adds a positive signal that counterbalances the old late payment.
- Do not close the affected account if it is now current — the account's age and eventual clean record contribute positively.
- Dispute genuine errors. If the late payment was reported in error (you have a receipt proving payment before the due date), dispute it with the bureau. Accurate corrections are made; factually accurate marks are not.
Applying for a PSU bank loan after a late payment
There is no fixed waiting period mandated across all PSU banks. The assessment is case-by-case. For a home loan routed through this portal, the underwriter at a PSU bank such as Indian Overseas Bank will look at when the late payment occurred, whether it was a one-off, what the current account status is, and how the rest of your credit profile looks. Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a 30-day late payment stay on a CIBIL report?
Up to seven years from the date of the late payment event, as per RBI data-retention guidelines for credit information companies. After seven years it ages off the report.
If I pay the overdue amount now, does the late payment disappear?
No. Paying the overdue amount closes the delinquency going forward, but the historical DPD code for the months when it was overdue remains on the report for the retention period. What changes is that the account shows as current, not still-overdue.
Does a late payment on a credit card affect a home loan more than a loan EMI?
Both are visible to underwriters. A missed home loan or car loan EMI (secured credit) is often viewed more seriously than a credit card late payment of the same DPD, because secured loan defaults signal a more significant financial event.
Can I get a home loan with a single 30-day late payment from 2 years ago?
Possibly. A single 030 mark from 24+ months ago with a clean record since then is not an automatic disqualification at most PSU banks. The final decision depends on the full credit profile, income, and the specific bank's credit policy.
